Does This Sound Like You?
If Any of These Feel Familiar, We Can Help
Most of our TMJ patients arrive having lived with these for months or years, often after being told there was nothing more to do.
Do you wake up with jaw soreness, tightness, or headaches?
Does your jaw click, pop, or catch when you chew or yawn?
Have you tried a night guard but still have pain?
Is it hard to open your mouth fully, or does it feel like it locks?
Do you have ear pain or fullness that your doctor could not explain?
Do you notice yourself clenching or grinding, especially under stress?
If you said yes to even one, a focused evaluation can tell you why. These are exactly the patterns our TMJ therapy is built to treat.
Understanding Your Condition
What Is the TMJ?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull, and when it is not working properly, it can affect nearly everything: eating, speaking, sleeping, and even your mood. TMJ dysfunction is more common than most people realize, yet it is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed.
Many people with TMJ pain have been told to simply “manage their stress” or given a mouth guard that provided little relief. What is often missing is treatment that addresses the root cause: the muscles, joints, and movement patterns driving the problem. Common symptoms include:
- Jaw pain or soreness, especially in the morning
- Clicking, popping, or locking of the jaw
- Headaches or facial tension
- Ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ears
- Difficulty opening your mouth
- Neck and shoulder pain connected to jaw tension
TMJ dysfunction rarely goes away on its own. Without the right treatment, symptoms can worsen over time, leading to limited jaw mobility, chronic headaches, or increased pain. The good news? Physical therapy is one of the most effective treatments available, and most patients notice meaningful improvement within the first few sessions.
Why Revive
Why Choose Revive?
Not every physical therapy clinic treats TMJ, and fewer still do it well. At Revive, jaw and facial pain is one of our core specialties, treated by therapists with advanced credentials and hands-on training specifically in TMJ and craniofacial dysfunction.
Advanced Credentials
Specialized Expertise,
Not a Generalist Approach
Our lead TMJ therapists hold certifications beyond the standard DPT, including COMT (Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist) and dry needling certification. Techniques like the Maitland Australian approach, myofascial release, and Active Release Technique (ART) are used to address both the joint itself and the surrounding muscles that drive your symptoms.
You will not be handed a sheet of generic exercises.

Conditions We Treat
TMJ Conditions We Treat
TMJ dysfunction presents differently in every patient. These are the most common conditions we address, often in combination with each other.
TMJ Dysfunction & Jaw Pain
The temporomandibular joint is among the most complex joints in the body, and dysfunction here rarely resolves on its own. We address joint mechanics, disc position, and surrounding musculature to restore pain-free movement at the source.
Jaw Clicking, Popping & Locking
Clicking and popping indicate that the articular disc is shifting abnormally with jaw movement. Locking means the disc has displaced beyond its normal path. Both are directly addressable with targeted manual therapy and joint mobilization.
Chronic Headaches & Facial Tension
The jaw sits adjacent to major nerves and muscles that run directly into the skull and neck. Tension in the TMJ frequently radiates upward as headaches and facial pain, a connection that is routinely missed until the jaw is properly evaluated.
Ear Pain & Fullness
The TMJ sits just millimeters from the ear canal. Inflammation and muscle tension in the jaw can directly produce ear pain, a sense of fullness or pressure, and even tinnitus, symptoms often attributed to ear problems before the jaw is ever examined.
Bruxism & Jaw Clenching
Clenching and grinding create chronic, cumulative stress on the joint and surrounding muscles. We address the muscular and postural drivers of bruxism so you wake up without jaw fatigue and morning headaches.
Neck & Shoulder Tension from TMJ
The muscles of the jaw, neck, and upper back are deeply interconnected. Compensatory tension from TMJ dysfunction frequently presents as neck stiffness and shoulder pain, symptoms that do not resolve until the jaw mechanics are properly treated.
Our Approach
How TMJ Treatment Works
A three-phase process that goes beyond symptom relief, addressing the root cause and giving you the tools to stay pain-free long after treatment ends.
Evaluate
Your first session is a comprehensive assessment of your jaw movement, joint mechanics, disc position, muscle tension, posture, and cervical spine, because TMJ dysfunction is rarely isolated to the jaw alone. You leave with a clear picture of what is happening and why.
Treat
Hands-on manual therapy forms the core of every session: joint mobilization, myofascial release, Active Release Technique, dry needling, and targeted therapeutic exercise. Treatment is progressively built on each visit, adapting to your response.
Maintain
Relief is only half the goal. We build you a personalized self-management program, including postural corrections, jaw exercises, sleep positioning, and daily habit adjustments, so you understand exactly how to keep symptoms from returning.
